Maintaining Student Engagement Throughout the Whole Semester

Thursday, September 9, 2021 - 2:00pm to 3:30pm
Online

It's one thing to "entertain" students for a single class meeting, but it's quite another to engage them from week 1 to week 15. To be successful in a course, students need to be able to persist throughout an entire semester. Although it's tempting to think of persistence and resilience as student characteristics, the reality is that instructor choices play a huge role in whether students will be able to sustain their engagement for long periods of time. In this workshop, we'll discuss how we can design our courses in ways that prompt and support sustained student engagement.

As faculty reach mid-career, their professional development needs can change.  The goals of tenure, promotion, or long-term contracts may no longer be guiding metrics, and career paths may not be as clear.  Mid-Career faculty may find themselves over-tasked with the demands of their students, the university, and their disciplines and struggle to carve out time to re-evaluate their goals.

Coming to Terms with Campus Controversies AppLC

Friday, September 3, 2021 - 2:00pm to Friday, December 3, 2021 - 3:00pm
Online in Zoom

Scholars and teachers in higher ed today contend with a set of conditions, controversies, and conflicts over campus climate, free expression, academic freedom, and the nature and purpose of our work. Should we be as “objective” as possible or should we be devoted to political causes and activist goals? Are we subject matter experts and authorities in our classrooms, or should we be breaking down power inequalities and finding ways to establish solidarity with our students?

"How to Be Less Stupid About Race" by Crystal Fleming is your essential guide to breaking through the half-truths and ridiculous misconceptions that have thoroughly corrupted the way race is represented in the classroom, pop culture, media, and politics. Centuries after our nation was founded on genocide, settler colonialism, and slavery, many Americans are waking up to the reality that our racial politics are (still) garbage.
