Building Reflection into STEM AppLC

Monday, January 24, 2022 - 3:00pm to Monday, April 25, 2022 - 4:00pm
218 Anne Belk Hall, CAE Classroom 222

Students in STEM classes know they are solving difficult problems, yet they are often less aware of the complex analytical skills that they simultaneously acquire. Furthermore, many traditional STEM assignments favor computational approaches, which may encourage students to focus on memorization and imitation thereby avoiding conceptual connections vital to STEM learning. Student reflection makes this higher-order thinking visible and strengthens connections and expertise across courses and disciplines.

In our quest to be student-centered, we can end up making choices that overwhelm us with their unsustainability. That is, it's easier to be a "sage on the stage" than it is to meet students where they are. In this session, we'll discuss how to stay student-centered while avoiding burnout.

Friday, January 7, 2022 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

If you've never taken the AsULearn gradebook plunge, you're not alone. Your spreadsheets have worked just fine for years, right? But wouldn't it be nice to finally eliminate all those emails from students wondering about their grades? Trust us, this is a teaching move students really dig (read: gets your teaching evals up) AND it saves you time - so it's great bang for your buck. And yes, the gradebook CAN handle your unusual grading scheme - the possibilities are basically limitless.
