In July 2000, Greg moved to his current position in the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) from his faculty position in Appalachian's Hayes School of Music, where he served as Coordinator of Music Theory. A thirty-year veteran of the classroom, Greg has been teaching college music theory, aural skills, and music technology since 1986, when he first became interested in computers and their relation to pedagogy. Some of the first tutorial programs using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) were written to provide music students with drill on the most basic of music fundamentals (scales, chords, etc.). It was through the use of these simple tutorial programs with music majors that Greg began to integrate technology with his interest in teaching.
Subsequently, as Coordinator of Music Theory and Technology at both Missouri State University (1994-97) and Appalachian (1997-2000), Greg designed, assembled, and managed two computer music labs, successfully integrated the use of these resources in the music curricula of each of the above institutions, and garnered much experience in the pedagogically sound application of technology.
Over the last decade, Greg has presented papers and workshops about instructional technology at conferences in St. Louis, Baton Rouge, Orlando, Vancouver, San Francisco, Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, and Greensboro, while continuing to teach in the Hayes School of Music. A gutarist, he also performs regularly around Boone in a duo with his wife, violinist Nancy Bargerstock.
Greg's current role as the lead CAE consultant for the Hayes School of Music and the Walker College of Business includes working with faculty members who wish to integrate technology into their teaching in elegant, instructionally powerful ways. He also serves as one of our AsULearn administrators, and is a certified Quality Matters Peer Course Reviewer. His personal interests include cycling, public service, and sketching.
