Tom Van Gilder is the Director of Learning Technology Services for the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) at Appalachian State University. He took the place of Dr. Steve Breiner who retired in 2016. He holds a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology from Appalachian State and had served as the Director of IT Support Services since 2006. Before that, he managed the IT program for the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University for 8 years.
As the head of the LTS/CAE unit at Appalachian, he coordinates a service-oriented unit who provide a comprehensive curriculum of training workshops and support for dealing with uses of the Moodle (branded AsULearn) learning management system, other instruction-related computing efforts, use of Interactive Video Services, and a general computer skills training program for faculty and staff at Appalachian. His IT-related interests involve effective uses of teaching and learning with a variety of technologies. He enjoys woodworking, golf, and digital photography.
