Book Club: The Race of Sound: Listening, Timbre, and Vocality in African American Music By Nina Sun Eidsheim

Date(s):
Thursday, September 30, 2021 - 4:00pm to Thursday, October 28, 2021 - 5:30pm
Location:
Online in Zoom

How do perceptions of race, gender, vocal technique, and timbre influence the ways in which a listener engages with music? How does a listener answer the question “Who is Singing?” when they cannot see the singer? By focusing on the listener (rather than the sound producer), Eidsheim’s The Race of Sound addresses these questions by investigating the ways in which Black American singers have been interpreted and misinterpreted in a variety of musical styles, including opera, jazz, and synthesized music.
