The CAE provides support for faculty, instructors, and administrators who teach online or who are looking to develop an online course throughout the Academic year. Our six Instructional Technology Consultants and several other members from our department provide support for teaching with technology tools such as AsULearn, Zoom Web-Conferencing, TurnItIn, VoiceThread, and Screencast-O-Matic for 1,470 faculty & instructors (based on data from Fall 2019).
When COVID-19 hit Boone, Appalachian State University was forced to respond by transitioning all of their face-to-face courses to online courses to “keep the learning going”. Needless to say, our department went into panic mode as around 50% of our faculty and instructors who taught face-to-face courses had never utilized AsULearn nor utilized teaching with technology tools. We knew that roughly 2,700 classes would have to transition from a face-to-face format to fully online. There was no way that our department could sustain supporting that many faculty in transitioning their courses in such a short amount of time.
To continue to provide guidance and support for our faculty in a timely manner, 50 faculty from various departments and colleges were chosen by the Center for Academic Excellence to serve as Faculty Champions, who would provide technical and instructional support for their colleagues and help the CAE stay afloat. The Faculty Champions would provide support with online delivery systems such as Zoom and AsULearn, facilitate workshops in collaboration with the ITCs, and assist faculty with making their course content accessible.
The Faculty Champions have also assisted their colleagues in:
- Managing AsULearn discussion boards
- Adjusting online assignments in congruence with their students disability accommodations
- Troubleshooting lecture capture in Zoom
- Merging multiple sections in AsULearn
The Faculty Champions have been lifesavers by playing a crucial role in helping our faculty and instructors “Keep Teaching.” In my opinion, the Faculty Champions and our Instructional Technology Consultants are an indispensable asset to the Appalachian Family and have played a vital role in helping the Spring 2020 semester continue to run smoothly. We appreciate all of your hard work!
