In the Spring 2017 semester, The Center for Academic Excellence partnered with Academic Affairs, Chief Diversity Office Dr. Willie Fleming, and Dr. Brandy Bryson of the Department of Leadership and Education Studies to form ASU's Inclusive Excellence (IE)Team. The Inclusive Excellence team strives so diversify and infuse inclusion into ASU's culture and curriculum through the planning and implementation of workshops, individual and group learning sessions, along with online resources.
The Inclusive Excellence Team is comprised of an Inclusive Excellence Director and six Inclusive Excellence Coordinators from the following departments:
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Cultural, Gender, and Global Studies
- Finance, Banking, and Insurance
- Leadership and Educational Studies
- Nursing
- Sociology
- Theatre and Dance
The IE team has played a vital role in helping our campus community gain a better understanding of how we can better support underrepresented groups on campus. Their skills and expertise have been utilized during the 2017 Summer Diversity Inclusion Institute, 2017-2018 New Faculty Orientation, professional development workshops with the Center for Academic Excellence and Human Resources, and many other campus-wide events.
On April 27, 2018, the IE Team will be hosting the Sustained Dialogue Training for one faculty member from each of the 44 departments on campus to become an Inclusive Excellence Liaison. During this training, each participants will gain an understanding and develop the skills necessary to integrate Inclusive Excellence through:
- Languages and concepts
- Support for underrepresented students
- The navigation of difficult dialogue and strong opinions
- Diversify curriculum and syllabi
- Classroom prevention and intervention strategies.
