Dr. Safiya Noble - Campus Talk

On October 7, 2019, Dr. Safiya Noble delivered an amazing campus talk about her research on racial and gender bias in algorithms, employed by ordinary search engines that we use everyday.

Dr. Noble, an Associate Professor at UCLA and a visiting faculty member to the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication, focuses her academic research on the design of digital media platforms on the internet and their impact on society. Her work is both sociological and interdisciplinary, marking the ways that digital media impacts and intersects with issues of race, gender, culture, and technology. Noble turned her investigation of Google and its biased search algorithms into a best-selling book, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism
