On the topic of motivation, and lack thereof, it is a mystery what may be going on in people's lives.
In reference to students, a failing grade is a good sign of troubling factors that may be either motivated related for that particular subject, or simply an outside force pulling the student away from academia.
Regardless, it is a simple step for an instructor to recognize and take time to reach out to students. Or as this article words it "nudge" them into a particular realization; simply signaling to them that they are not alone and that in fact, you do have an eye on them.
