Faculty Support and Consultations

The Center for Academic Excellence supports faculty in the design, development, and delivery of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses at Appalachian. Whether through professional development, consultations, or ongoing communication, we’re here to support faculty, both new and experienced instructors.

Instructional Technology Consultants

Each college or school at Appalachian has been assigned a lead CAE Instructional Technology Consultant as follows:

Faculty Champions

The Center for Academic Excellence has enlisted the help of many faculty champions in the campus community to help provide a first line of technical support to their departmental colleagues. Faculty champions can:

  • Help colleagues transitioning to online delivery (AsULearn, Zoom, and other technology support);
  • Provide consultations on a variety of teaching technology available on campus, sometimes in collaboration with the college ITC; and
  • Help faculty with efforts for accessible course content.

Please contact your department chair or your ITC to learn who your current faculty champion is.

Submit a support ticket to describe a particular issue or request someone to contact you :

  • Log in with your Appalachian ID and password
  • Under New Incident: Click to Submit a New Incident
  • For Incident Type select:
    • (3) Online Accounts, then for Account : AsULearn; or
    • (7) Software Training (MS Office & Adobe, Drupal, Workshop Scheduler)
  • Complete the incident form; someone will respond to your issue promptly

Online Learning Consortium (OLC)

The Online Learning Consortium (OLC) is a collaborative higher education community dedicated to advancing quality digital teaching and learning. As an OLC Institutional Member, Appalachian State has access to professional development opportunities and conferences as well as access to OLC resources for online teaching like the OLC Quality Scorecards.

Quality Matters (QM)

Quality Matters (QM) is a research-based national benchmark aimed at improving student learning experiences in online programs and courses. The QM curriculum introduces faculty to best practices in instructional design, provides rubrics for assessing online course design and outlines a peer-review process for continuous improvement of online and hybrid courses

University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA)

UPCEA is an American non-profit association for professional, continuing, and online higher education. Membership allows access to networking opportunities at UPCEA’s national and regional conferences and seminars.
